The areas of Nashville are as diverse as they are expansive, so here’s a short guide to where to go and what to see when you hit up Music City!
East End: One of the more up and coming areas of the city, East End is quirky and growing. This area’s still in transition meaning you may still need a home alarm to live here but artisan restaurants and fun shops soften the blow.
Hillside Village: Only a few streets and blocks long, Hillside is a cute shopping district with tons of stores and restaurants. Full of Vanderbilt students and doctors from nearby hospitals this is an affluent area with a charm all its own.
Belle Meade: Nashville’s answer to Beverly Hills, Belle Meade is named for a plantation home in the neighborhood. Where many of the city’s big wigs and celebrities live, Belle Meade is a pleasant drive and worlds away from downtown.
Downtown: Speaking of downtown, if you want real Nashville flair, head on over to the Downtown area to get your fill of Honky Tonk and live music. Dive bars and line dancing abound here and you can’t say you’ve seen Nashville if you haven’t lived it up in town!

Of Tennessee’s many attributes, low crime rates are not one of them. The state as well as the city of Nashville has not traditionally ranked very well on lists of safe places. In 2006, the U.S. Census Bureau ranked Tennessee 2nd for the most violent crimes per 100,000 people, with a rate of 760 of these crimes per 100,000 residents. Violent crimes consist of murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. In 2009, Congressional Quarterly magazine ranked Tennessee 6th for most crime overall, including both violent and property crimes. Though Nashville has traditionally not fared so well in this category, the city is finally seeing changes. 2009 marked the sixth year in a row that crime rates in the city fell. According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, rape, larceny, robbery, aggravated assault, and motor vehicle theft all reported significantly fewer incidences in 2009. Despite these improvements, when moving to Nashville, or anywhere, it is important to take measures to protect your property and, more importantly, your loved ones.Advancements in home security technology are helping to reduce crime rates nationwide and can help you sleep worry-free at night and give you peace of mind when you’re away. Homes with a security system are at least three times less likely to be robbed. Immediate notification of home security personnel and local law enforcement help keep your home out of harm’s way. Another recent trend is text and email notification systems. Many security companies offer you a way to be notified via other electronic devices if there is a problem at home or the alarm goes off. Some smart phones such as the Apple iPhone even have an application that allows you to activate or deactivate your alarm, no matter where you are, using your phone. Being aware of the crime rates in your city is important, but with the home security technology of today, it’s nothing to lose sleep over.

After the dust has settled from the big move, you’re going to want to take a look around town and get to know the place you now call home. Known as the music capital of the world, Nashville has a lot to offer from a music standpoint, but this city’s accolades don’t stop there. Take a look at our top ten list of places to visit in Nashville.

The Opry House: Home to the world famous Grand Ole Opry, this music venue offers a range of shows and concerts capturing the history and namesake of this great city. See where some of country music’s biggest stars got their start and browse through the Opry store for apparel and memorabilia.

The Hermitage: Step back in time on what was once Andrew Jackson’s 1000-acre estate. Turned into a museum in 1889, the Hermitage is now a place to discover the history of Nashville and the South.

Music Row: This is the site of the many recording studios that fill the city of Nashville. A great place to visit if you’re interested in a career in this industry or just want to step foot where Elvis recorded many of his hit songs.

Ryman Auditorium: Another great place to see shows and concerts in Nashville, Ryman Auditorium was the site of the Grand Ole Opry for over 30 years from 1943 to 1974. Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Dolly Parton are just a few of the legends who have performed in this theater.

Belle Meade Plantation: Filled with Nashville history, this plantation was the site of the Battle of Nashville during the Civil War. Here you can also witness the Greek style architecture that was so popular during the antebellum period.

Tennessee State Museum: This museum has slowly evolved from its humble beginnings in 1817 to what it is today; housing numerous permanent exhibits, traveling showcases and even a war memorial building.

The Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park: If you want a relaxing day with friends or family, this is the city’s largest park. It also offers pieces of historic Nashville, including a replica of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, built in 1897.

Tennessee Performing Arts Museum: This museum is located in the James K. Polk Cultural Center along with the Tennessee state museum. Broadway shows and private parties are the main source of entertainment here.

Fort Nashborough: This reconstruction of the original fort where the first settlers in the area made their home is a great place to get a feel for the history of the city.

Mansion: Now home to Belmont University, this site began as a large house museum and later became an all-girls school before becoming the co-ed university it is today. Today, the beautifully restored home is still a museum that can be toured and serves as a student center for the university.

One of the less glamorous, but necessary, parts of moving is finding and installing all your new utilities. This includes everything from cable to internet home air conditioning and heating systems. When you are looking for utility companies and products there are a few important things to remember. If available, you may want to consider Energy Star appliances for your new home. These energy efficient products can save you money every month on energy costs as well as reduce your carbon footprint. Its also important to purchase up to date products so you won’t be dying to replace them in only a couple years. One of the areas where this is most relevant is your wireless internet source. Chances are, if you’re like most of us, you have some sort of dependency on wireless capabilities, whether it’s for checking email, finding movie times at the theater, or checking your Facebook page. Home internet comes in many forms such as cable, dial up or broadband. Broadband usually provides the highest data rates for fastest connectivity. Before you purchase an Internet package, compare other similar plans to find the provider with the best connection and coverage. You’ll quickly come to resent your Internet if it’s not up to standard and sometimes changing plans can be a costly hassle. Another thought to consider is where you live. If you’ve gone for a home farther from the city, you may want to consider satellite Internet. Satellite Internet provides you with high-speed Internet access even in remote locations. Because this technology works by sending signals to a satellite thousands of miles away, there can be a slight delay known as latency. Therefore, satellite Internet can pose problems for real time activities such as online gaming or online stock trading.

Now that you know you’re moving to Nashville, one of the first things to decide is where in the Music City you want to live. Nashville is home to a variety of different neighborhoods catering to different lifestyles and interests. Before you rent or buy your new home, make sure you find the right place for you.If you’re looking for a quaint, low-key community, you might want to consider either East Nashville or Sylvan Park. While East Nashville is more of a historic and eclectic community, Sylvan Park has a quieter, traditional Southern feel to it. If you want to be closer to the heart of the action, take a look at Hillsboro Village or Elliston Place. Both of these communities are close to Belmont University and Vanderbilt University. Teeming with nightclubs, music venues, and breweries, these neighborhoods are great for the younger demographics. Green Hills village is a great neighborhood to settle in if you’re looking for an upscale home and community. It may be a little pricier but there is still plenty going on in this community, including the famous Bluebird caf, where many country music stars got their start. Become a part of a new and growing neighborhood in 12 South. This community appeals to a range of interests and is known for its many unique restaurants. No matter where you decide to plant your roots in Nashville you are bound to enjoy this amazing city. Wherever you go you’ll find history being relived and remembered. Nashville also has plenty of nightlife and entertainment. If you’re not a fan of country music, don’t run screaming, there are plenty other genres making a name in the Music City.

If you’re home was damaged in the flood, the first step you’ll need to take is assessing the damage done. From there you’ll need to find a construction or repairs company to fix any problems you may have. It is required that you obtain a permit before repairs are made to a water damaged home. Normally such a permit would have to be obtained in person at the Department of Codes Administration, but because of the unusual circumstances surrounding this natural disaster, the city has made provisions for such a permit to be obtained online.Another important step in this process if finding and receiving financial assistance for your home repairs. There are several ways to go about this. You can file a claim online with FEMA in order to be considered for disaster assistance. A questionnaire can be taken first to help you understand and determine for what type of assistance you are eligible. The deadline to register for disaster relief assistance is Tuesday July 6th. The Community Foundation is an organization set up to provide disaster relief to Middle Tennessee. If you haven’t personally been affected and want to donate to this fund you can do so online, text FLOOD to 501501 to donate 10, or mail in your donations. You can visit the Community Foundation’s website for information on how to receive assistance and access to Red Cross chapters and assistance centers. The flood may have put a damper on your Nashville move, but fortunately there are a number of resources available to help you get your home restored.
