rhinebeck schminebeck. We don't need no stinking Rhinebeck. Here in the South, we've got... um, something.
We've got this little Fall Fest that occurs about 30 miles outside of Nashville every year in a town called Murfreesboro. It's really kind of a Pioneer days type thing - soapmaking, etc. etc. mixed with some really awful modern day crafts - and in a small, out of the way corner of all this hubub you'll find our very own Fiber Fest. Granted, we don't have enough actual cold weather here to merit even wearing a sweater much less knitting one, but in the heart of Murfreesboro, there you will find the die hard fiber lovers from the mid state area.
And really, it's not too hard to pull us out. It's October, so that means it's merely 80 here. Wait! Today we lucked out and it was 65 and absolutely beautiful out so droves (well, maybe not droves, but like the 15 us who knew and cared enough to leave our houses) of yarn junkies and spinning groupies and sheep fans gathered to eat the Prison Ministries fundraising chili (did I mention the Prison Ministries?), maybe get our face painted, and watch some dozing sheep shorn of its dignity.
We've got everything you've got Rhinebeck - goats, angora rabbits, maybe a Great Pyrenees or two, sheep, llamas, lots of spinning, cloggers,... wait, you don't have cloggers? See, that's where you're lacking. Cloggers can only enhance any fiber themed event.
We've got lots of krafts you won't see anywhere else! This lady made holiday themed ceramics. She even had halloween themed angels that she told me were popular to take to CEMETARIES. She had candy corn in a bowl that she lured my little kiddo over with, but I suspected had I looked away she might try to cook her in an oven.
Back in Fiber Corner, things picked up. Business seemed brisk! I ran into Tina of threaded bliss who was getting a little lesson in dying silk (and who scored the silk skein I wanted! See her taunting me with it there in the picture on the left), Pam of angel hair yarn who was trying to keep her own kiddo from eating the goat's milk lye (she said it smelled pretty), and many other yarn store friends. I kept an eye out for dixie, but never saw her. Perhaps the prison chili or the cemetary halloween angels or the square dancing made her question her choice of activity for the day.
I got a couple of things in honor of fall: this gorgeous skein of silk in fall colors in a gauge so fine that it is sure to drive me to madness, and about ten of these silk skeins in this natural color. They are heavenly soft and lovely.
Forgot to add - I met a lovely woman that is opening a yarn store in Murfreesboro called The Knaughty Knitter (she'll be carrying spinning supplies as well).
So there Rhinebeck. Eat that. Next year get some cloggers and then we'll talk.
Next year I'm going to be living 2 hours from Rhinebeck. How about a road (air) trip?
Posted by: Becky Sue at October 22, 2005 04:54 PMThe shame of no cloggers. I'm bitter.
Were you too afraid of the cemetery-angel lady to take a closer shot of the table for us? Cheesh. xoox Kay
Posted by: Kay at October 22, 2005 06:28 PMKrafts. Wow. That silk is gorgeous. Rhinebeck? What-ever.
Posted by: Nicole at October 22, 2005 07:03 PMI just missed you. I ran into Pam and she said that you had been around earlier. Couldn't do the chili, but I did have a prison burger. You forgot to mention the bonnets that were for sale! Gee whiz, go to Cannonsburgh and don't mention the polyester dacron blend bonnets.
Posted by: Dixie at October 23, 2005 04:50 AMI feel like I'm missing all the fun!! I have not been able to find a single Halloween angel in LA. I am a little disturbed that those goats were tied to a cement block!?!?
