giving birth to a baby sweater

IMG_3504.JPG

oh lord, what a crazy 8 or 9 months it's been. you might remember that i got married in september, and everything turned out beautifully. all the people that mattered were there, nobody got drunk and did the funky chicken at the reception (not that it would have been a bad thing......), the ceremony was touching and meaningful, the monsoon-like rains that were headed our way switched course at the last minute..........oh yeah, and i had morning sickness (who the hell named it that anyway? they should be shot.) the whole week before the wedding, the whole day of the wedding, and the whole week of our honeymoon. and then for three months after, sometimes so bad that i wished a hole would open up in my living room floor (next to the couch of course, since i could not move from that spot except to go to the bathroom to hang my head in the toilet) so that i could jump in and end my miserable existence.

that's right, i found out a week before my wedding that i was pregnant. SURPRISE!!!!!!! let's just say it wasn't, ahem, "planned". but being a firm believer in some sort of order in the universe, lee and i went with the flow and now are very excited about giving up all our free time, being woken up ten or twelve times a night, and having a crapload of brightly colored plastic shite strewn all over our house. ok, just kidding, we're delighted we're having a baby (a boy, unless the woman doing the ultrasound was drinking on the job that day).

i've said all that to say this: i made a baby sweater for the little guy to come home in. it is from this website (the asymmetrical baby cardigan), knit out of araucania nature cotton and fastened with two buttons i got out of a huge bag of old buttons my dearly departed grandmother saved from years and years ago. i might change the buttons, but probably not, as i am lazy and think they look just fine really. i'm not exactly sure why my sweater doesn't look like the picture on the website, but really, the kid won't have a clue.

i have vascillated between being worried that it is too big for a newborn to hoping it is too big for *my* newborn, as the idea of squeezing something out of my nether regions that is large enough to fit into this sweater is a daunting thought during "i am a birthing goddess" times and an eye popping heart racer of a thought during more uncertain, "am i sure i want to attempt natural childbirth" times. i'll let you know how it turns out.

i do seem to have gotten my knitting groove back, however, which is great news. i thought my next project would be the kitty pi kitty bed, but instead i am inspired by the koigu tube that will use up three balls of koigu that have been languishing in my cedar yarn chest (also from my dearly departed grandmother) for many months. in between working on that and stitching up my wedding shower afghan, i am going to make some washcloths for string scrubbie project also gleaned from the lovely women at masondixonknitting.com.

dang, sorry this is so long, but i have some ketchin' up to do. i think angela has written enough for a book while i've been busy gettin' knocked up and hitched..............

the sweater is darling! you should try kristi's flat pants (scroll to the bottom of her pattern page), they are great for beginning seamstresses and are perfect for babies in cloth diapers.

and trust me angel, when the time comes, you WILL be a birthing goddess, no matter how your little prince gets out.

Angel - You're alive! I am sooo happy to hear from you and about you. And to see your little guy's sweater is too sweet. Rowena's right - you and Lee and le bebe will all do fabulous. Can't wait to see you all:)
